THINKING PHOTOGRAPHY

Lighting in Portraiture

This project was created during my 3rd year at university, during a photography module.

I was inspired by light used in portraiture and the use of plants and different light sources, to create shadows and glows on the face and other parts of the body. The way that light is captured has inspired me. Using different types of light such as natural light from the sun, and different artificial styles like indoor lamps and fairy lights.

Some photographers I have been inspired by are Justin Laurens and Leanne Surfleet. The look to the images by Surfleet, she takes mostly self-portraits, flowers, and other aspects of her room with the window light to help frame and create different shadows. For her shots she has used a film camera which has created a fuzzy effect to her images. Justin Laurens has great examples of shots using artificial light, and some of these I have experimented with.
